Residential building Schartentrottenstrasse 11, Baden AG

The compact reinforced concrete building, with its scattered windows, sits at the end of a row of four seamlessly connected terraced houses, nestled amongst the lush greenery of a quiet cul-de-sac on the Lägern slope.

Built between 1961 and 1963, this early work by Messmer and Graf Architects is characterised by the use of exposed concrete as a design element on the façades and by the multi-faceted, segmented flat roofs.

Our Questions

  • Will it get too hot indoors during the summer in the future?
  • Will the damage to reinforced concrete – which is already costly to treat today – be accelerated by climate change?
  • What effective methods and techniques will we need in future to maintain exposed concrete?
  • What maintenance measures can owners carry out on an ongoing basis to prevent costly full-scale renovations?
