Residential building Bergweg 5, Trogen AR
This 19th-century timber-framed building is situated within the village on a ridge that is heavily exposed to the elements. The shingle-clad façades of this impressive Appenzell house were recently renovated using traditional methods without structural rear ventilation. So far, this wall construction has proved its worth; it shows no signs of damage. However, signs of damage are currently being observed with increasing frequency on comparable structures in other buildings.
Our Questions
- How do the thermal performance values of shingle-clad façades change under the new conditions?
- Can the damage observed be attributed to increasingly damp winter months?
- Can this traditional wall construction still be used in the future?
