Field studies at the Hotel Regina Mürren
In autumn 2026, the next phase of research for our ‘Climate Resilient Cultural Heritage’ project begins at the Hotel Regina Mürren.
The aim is to investigate the effects of climate change on built cultural heritage. The focus here is particularly on the hotel’s historic façades. The restoration surveys will involve analysing photographic and written sources, documenting the structural composition of the façades, and recording damage caused by climate change. The findings are intended to contribute to a deeper understanding of the vulnerability of the historic building fabric and to lay the foundations for future conservation strategies.
Students Lea Vollenweider, Sarah Jäggli and Joël Bernasconi from the Conservation and Restoration Department at the Bern Academy of the Arts (HKB) are involved in the research. As part of their studies, they are contributing to selected investigative and documentation tasks. This gives them an insight into current research questions at the interface between cultural heritage conservation and climate change.
The work is supervised by Jonas Roters, lecturer in Conservation and Restoration at the HKB, in collaboration with Gisela Vollmer, a member of the hotel’s Building and Design Commission. We would like to thank everyone involved for their great commitment and look forward to our joint research work.
